tiny11builder: A Software Engineer's Secret Weapon
For a software engineer, tiny11builder offers several key advantages, all aimed at creating a lean, distraction-free, and high-performance system.
Boosted Performance
A standard Windows 11 installation comes with a lot of pre-installed apps and services that you might not need. These consume valuable CPU and RAM, which can slow down your development tools like Visual Studio, Docker, or Android Studio. By removing these, you free up resources, leading to faster compile times and a more responsive system.
Minimalist Development Environment
A stripped-down OS is perfect for a developer who wants to minimize distractions. There's no extra bloat, no unnecessary apps, and no background processes running that could interfere with your work. It creates a clean slate tailored specifically for coding.
Virtual Machine Optimization
If you use virtual machines (VMs) for testing or isolated environments, a tiny11 image is a game-changer. It has a significantly smaller footprint, meaning your VMs will take up less storage space and run more efficiently on your host machine. This is particularly useful for CI/CD pipelines or running multiple test environments simultaneously.
Resource Conservation
For engineers working on older hardware or laptops with limited resources, this tool can make a big difference. It reduces the strain on your hardware, extending its lifespan and making it feel much snappier.
Getting started with tiny11builder is straightforward. It's a script that you run, but you need to set things up first.
Download the Scripts
Head over to the ntdevlabs/tiny11builder GitHub repository. You can clone it using Git or simply download the ZIP file.
git clone https://github.com/ntdevlabs/tiny11builder.git
Get a Windows 11 ISO
You'll need a legitimate Windows 11 ISO image file. You can download one directly from Microsoft's website. Make sure you get the standard consumer edition.
Run the Script
Open a PowerShell terminal with administrator privileges. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the scripts. The main script you'll use is tiny11builder.ps1.
The script takes a few arguments, most importantly the path to your Windows 11 ISO. Here's a simple command to get you started
.\tiny11builder.ps1 -iso "C:\path\to\your\windows11.iso"
This command will launch the process, which will extract the necessary files, remove the bloat, and then create a new, minimal ISO file for you to use.
Create your tiny11 machine
Once the script completes, you will have a new ISO file. You can use this to create a new virtual machine or a bootable USB drive to install it on a physical machine. When installing, you'll notice the process is much faster since there are fewer components to install.
Let's imagine you're setting up a new VM for testing a web application. You need a clean environment with just the essentials.
Get the ISO
You download the Windows 11 ISO.
Run the script
You use the command from above. The script removes things like Microsoft Edge, pre-installed Xbox apps, Teams, and other telemetry services. It also removes components that you wouldn't need for a server-like environment.
Install the OS
You create a new VM in VirtualBox or Hyper-V and use the newly created, smaller ISO to install the OS.
Install your tools
After the OS is installed, you just install what you need
Node.js, a web server like IIS Express, and your code editor (VS Code, for example). The system will feel light and fast, with all the resources dedicated to your development tools.
